BEST PRACTICES FOR MARKETING TO TEENS
As a new to the industry, I’ve found that teens are harder to reach than I’d ever anticipated. I loved that I had the opportunity to learn more about my business in a social media marketing class I took, but I have to admit I don’t have a firm grasp on how to successfully reach the demographic. Before I get too far off track here, I want to mention that there are ways to increase your chances for success. From my earlier research, teenagers regularly use social media, which is a huge opportunity for you as a marketer to reach them. In addition, many teens have smartphones and are using them to connect with friends and family. If you are looking to reach this demographic, here are some best practices for marketing to teens:
• Be relatable - As a marketer, it’s important that you connect with your audience on a personal level. If they don’t feel like they know or trust you, then they will be less likely to buy from you. The best way to do this is by talking about yourself and being honest!
- Follow them – Social media has made it so easy for us all to stay connected with others around the world. Teenagers take advantage of this opportunity as well and follow brands such as yours in order keep up with what’s going on in their lives…and yours! It. • Be interactive – Teens are used to having a voice and being able to express themselves constantly. They love it when you engage with them on social media, so make sure that your posts have some sort of interaction. Whether they’re asking questions or giving feedback, be quick to respond and show them that you care about what they are saying. This will help build trust between the two of you which can lead into sales down the road!
• Be responsive - Teens are always on the go and have a lot going on in their lives. They’re constantly looking for new things to do with friends, so make sure that you stay in touch with them and provide value at all times! If they send you an email or message, respond as soon as possible. This is important because if they don’t hear back from you quickly, then it can be easy for them to get distracted by something else. • Be consistent – As I mentioned earlier, teens are always busy doing something; whether that be school work or hanging out with friends. Because of this, it’s important that your content is posted consistently throughout the week so they know what to expect when they return to your page. • Be personable – Similar to being relatable, it’s important that you are yourself on social media. If someone is looking at your Instagram account and sees that you’re posting pictures of a trip to Vegas or some other extravagant vacation, then they will be less likely to trust you with their money when buying products from you. Instead, post about the things that interest them such as sports or music!
